The definition of a tune-up has definitely changed.  The delicate mechanics of an engine that used to need near-constant attention have given way to an array of modern electronics and sensors.  With such an alteration in the way a vehicle works, what exactly does a modern tune-up entail?


Houston European import car repair shops often perform tune ups.  Though the process differs from what it once was, the intent is the same.  The purpose of any tune up is to ensure that the vehicle is running at peak efficiency and make any adjustment or changes to support that end.

Tune ups used to mean replacing lot of parts and making a lot of physical adjustments.  Mechanics used to pull and replace spark plugs and distributor points along with other parts.  Filters would be changed out and ignition timing would be checked.  Some of these services are still done, but the electronics of an engine have altered the way that service technicians do the job.

In a modern import car, repair takes a different form.  The distributor is gone and computers check the timing.  However, this doesn’t mean that your car can’t use a little help to keep running smoothly.  Regular maintenance can still keep an engine running well and efficiently.

The services included in a tune up are largely determined by the individual import auto service provider.  Some may check one thing while the next has a completely different set of services.  This can leave the door open for a consumer rip-off.  You should always ask what services are included and why.  If parts are to be replaced, ask the technician to show you the old ones and point out where the new ones have been installed.  At minimum, you should get back some spark plugs.

A modern tune up will scan the car’s on-board computer systems.  Technicians will look for any past or pending fault codes.  These codes are like a road map to internal problems.  Battery voltage should be checked and a visual inspection of all hoses and belts should take place.  Fluid levels should be checked and filled if necessary. Checking the oxygen sensors is a good idea, but replacement may not be covered in a standard tune up price.
